Hi BEAUTIES! As promised I’m back with my version of the recent release from “Sew over it” – The Heather Dress! I’ve only recently discovered and become a fan of their patterns so as soon as I saw this PDF only release on Instagram last week, I had to jump on it! The front pockets sold me! 🙂 Full review below! I’ve also considered making a video review on this pattern for those of you are interested in purchasing? Let me know in the comments. Have a WONDERFUL day, see you soon! XO

SOI: HEATHER DRESS - ROSY | PEÑA

Pattern Description: Versatile and super comfy, the Heather Dress is sure to be a wardrobe staple. A gorgeously chic jersey dress, Heather can be smart as well as casual and will keep you looking put-together and fab wherever you are; at work, for dinner out or just at home. It’s the perfect thing for cosying up in in winter. We love her paired with a chunky wool scarf, thick tights and boots for a stylish, effortless look. – The Heather Dress
Pattern Sizing: 8- 20, I cut the size 8.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes 🙂

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes, I prefer real images of the garment and process in the instructions as opposed to seeing a drawing. So this is a winner for me, I find it easer to follow along when you can see an actual dress in the making on each step. The wording was also spot on. I got off course for a second at the pocket because I’m used to adding pockets at the side seam but a quick glance at the instructions got me back on course as she clearly says to pin the pocket bag to the center front panel (my mistake). A+ for instructions.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? Love the pockets as stated, and the semi relaxed fit. Also I love the option to do some color blocking with the paneling!

Fabric Used: Herringbone Ponte Knit from Joann’s fabric

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I did have to make some changes to the patterns after fitting; I took in an additonal 1/2″ at side seams of the center front/center back panel pieces. 1/2″ at the curved area of the center back panel, 1/2″ at the side of the front panel and 1/2″ at the side and center pieces of the side back panel, 1/2″ at the side of the pocket bag. Also 3″ off of the length and a 1″ hem. I really thought this was going to fit how I wanted right from the pattern but there was a lot of extra fabric on the lower half of the body for me. The upper body and sleeves fit perfectly however.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others? Um, Yes! I want to make my sister one! 🙂 She also loved the style of the dress pattern!

  1. Hi Rosie, you look fab as always!:) I’m considering taking advantage of Lisa’s sale today and your review really stands out (checking out reviews on P.R)! I’m not much into full skirts (which most of Sew Over It patterns have) but this one looks quite a bit more fitted & definitely more my style. I have several cuts of Ponte knit in my stash that I think would be great to use in this pattern.:)

    1. Rikki! I haven’t looked back on these photos in a while! Thank you I was thinner and miss the long hair! LOL. Sorry I’m SO late on responding! The pattern worked great I just remember having to take out a good bit from the side seams on this one. I wish Lisa would make more patterns with this aesthetic! I love the heather dress once I tweaked the fit. Did you end up getting the pattern? XO

    1. You’re so welcome! 🙂 It’s a great dress after the fitting, I’ve been meaning to make another! XO

  2. this looks fab on you and this is just my style. I love simple dresses like this. Love your makes and you are destined to blow up!! keep inspiring us.

    1. Hi there! Thank you for the sweet words! 🙂 I will defintely keep up the sewing for 2017, have an awesome New Year! XO

  3. I also have this pattern and also had to take it in A LOT at the sides, and even now it is not a snug fit. I also think the next one I make I will somehow try to shorten the bodice so the pockets sit where yours do…mine are quite low. Your dress looks beautiful!

    1. Thank you for the comment Becky! Hopefully you can get the fit you are wanting on the next one! 🙂 It’s such a nice dress pattern, cute and comfortable! XO Happy New Year!

  4. I really do love the dress on you Rosy! I am not a “one-piece” dress person but seeing this one on you makes me want to give it a try!

  5. Hi Rosy!
This looks gorgeous and super comfy. I would love to see a video on the make up process!💛
I was looking at this PDF earlier and thinking of getting it. I love Sew Over It patterns!
    Thank you for the blog

  6. You look lovely Rosy! I have this pattern and am looking forward to finding fabric for it.

So, from your descrption, it sounds like you took 4″ out of the waist-to-hip area. Is that right?

    1. Thank you! It really is a great pattern! Yes that is correct, it’s a very “hippy” pattern which I also read from a review on The Foldline website from a reviewer that is a larger pattern size than myself, it seems the extra design ease at the waist to hip is consistent throughout the sizes. The fit style on Lisa Comfort from the pattern cover sheet was the style I wanted to go for, so I found I needed to take out the extra fabric and also shorten the dress a bit.
