DIY Turban Headband Tutorial - Rosy | Peña

Alright lets get started!

Supplies: You only need a few!

  1. 1/4 Yard of Stretchy knit fabric (can even use an old t-shirt)
  2. 1 sheet of copy paper (regular 8.5 x 11 sheet)
  3. Permanent marker or pen
  4. Pins
  5. Fabric scissors or rotary cutter (whichever you prefer)
  6. Sewing machine
  7. Coordinating thread
  8. Pattern weights (forgot to include them in the pic below, I use large washers)

After you’ve gathered your supplies we’re ready to get started! 🙂

Get your paper and with the short end toward you and your marker ready!

IMG_0456

Write “Fold” with arrows at the bottom of the paper. (so you know to cut on the fold of your fabric)

IMG_0457

Then write on the pattern piece “Turban Headband” and the directions so you can reuse this over and over to make more! (This paper in itself is all we need to cut out our fabric, perfect size already!) AWESOME.

IMG_0458

Great, now place your fabric right sides together and with the most stretch of the fabric running lengthwise. Place your pattern on top along the fold of your fabric and place your pattern weights on top of that. Cut around with either the scissors or rotary cutter whichever you prefer.

IMG_0461

Just like this.

IMG_0462

Repeat the above steps 1 more time so you end up with two pattern pieces.

IMG_0463

Now open up your fabric pieces and lay them flat on your work surface.

IMG_0467

Now along the length of your fabric you are going to turn in up onto itself right sides together.

IMG_0472

Repeat to both pieces and pin along the entire length of the fabric.

IMG_0474

Now take it to your machine and with a zig zag stitch or a “stretch stitch” your are going to sew along the entire length with the raw edge of your fabric matching up with the edge of your presser foot on the machine. (do not use a straight stitch here or your stitches will POP as soon as you try to put this on!)

IMG_0480

Repeat the above step to your other pattern piece.

IMG_0494

Once you’ve sewn both pieces it should look something like the picture below. (I used white thread so you all will be able to see better, you should use coordinating thread)

IMG_0496

Okay so now you want to take your hand and place inside the pieces and turn them right side out (as if you’d be turning out a sock). Lay them flat with the seam running along the center of pieces and take them to your ironing board. Press them flat so they are neater and easier to work with.

IMG_0500

No lay your pieces in a cross formation on your work surface with the seams facing up.

IMG_0502

Grab the short ends of the piece that is on the bottom and bring the ends together.

IMG_0508

Pull up your fabric pieces.

IMG_0509

Bring the opposite two ends to each other and lay your pieces flat on your table. (It’s starting to take shape!)

IMG_0511

Now grab both layers on one end and bring them to the opposite end making sure you twist around once instead of bringing them directly together.

IMG_0514

Pin all layers together.

IMG_0517

Take your work to the sewing machine and again with a zig zag or stretch stitch sew with the raw edge of the fabric aligned with the raw edge of your presser foot. (make sure to remove your pins as you go, do not sew over your pins).

IMG_0520

It should look something like below when you are finished.

IMG_0523

Alright all thats left to do is trim the excess fabric in your seam allowance close to your stitching. Now turn the seam to the inside and your all FINISHED! Super easy right? I told you 🙂

  1. Hello! Thank you for the tutorial. I have tried to make this using the zigzag stitch, but it always ends up popping still. Are you using a ball point needle and what settings do you have your machine on? Thanks!
